| Like all over the world Christmas is also in Spain a very important family event. Not only at Christmas time but also during the year the family plays an important role in the countries of Southern Europe such as Spain or Italy. So you can imagine what a joyful event it must be and how passionate people there try to spend every minute especially at Christmas with their beloved ones. But not only the Spanish celebrate Christmas in their country there are also many tourists who come especially to Alicante at this time to spend Christmas for example at villas in Denia or accommodations in Calpe. Spain is the country in which people play most lottery and there is probably no Spanish person who especially during the Christmas lottery does no buy a ticket. On the other hand for some it is the only time of the year that they buy a ticket. But therefore they spend really high amounts. Most of the people spend between 6 and 150 euro and 10 % even more than 150 euro. The advent season is usually a rather quiet period in Spain. But the Christmas lottery is an important event during these days. Due to the total amount offered it is considered the world`s biggest lottery and takes place in Spain since 1812 always in the same way. Most of the Spanish people but also tourists from Germany and the UK trying to escape the bad weather in their countries by spending their Christmas holidays at villas in Denia or aaccommodations in Calpe buy tickets for this lottery and watch with excitement the drawing, transmitted by public radio and TV channels. So it is beyond question that there are very special and lovely traditions that are celebrated every year at Christmas time in Spain. On 24 December, on Christmas Eve the whole family comes together to have a delicious Christmas dinner. The “Turron” is a very typical Spanish sweet that consists of roasted almonds, sugar, honey and eggs and therefore must not be missed as a dessert. After the dinner the “urn of destiny” is placed on the table. Inside are a lot of small presents but also blanks. Everyone draws as long as he gets a present. The actual gift giving as we know it on Christmas Eve takes traditionally place in Spain not until 6 January. However, is a trend to give the presents to the children already on Christmas Eve. On 5 January the three Magi come to the Spanish towns. There they are welcomed with a big procession and bible presentations. The children receive sweets. At night the children put their shoes as well as straw and water for the camels in front of their rooms and hope to get presents. And finally on 6 January the children get the presents they have been longing for. It all ends with a feast in the evening. A delicacy is a cake in the shape of a ring called “Rosco de Reyes” in which a small figure is hidden. The one who gets the piece with the figure in inside can proudly name himself “King”. |
