| Barely anybody is unaware of the term 'mass media'. Daily we consult mass media sources to learn the latest home and international news, find necessary information, to entertain or to listen to the weather. The importance of mass media now is huge. Mass media play a big role in forming and reflecting public opinion, connecting people and the world. Mass media have a strong social and cultural influence upon society, because it can reach a wider audience. They include four primary sources: TV, press, radio and the Web. Daily millions of magazines and papers are published all over the world. The list of them seems unlimited. There are various national and local papers, dailies and weeklies, quality newspapers that cater to the better educated readers and tabloids that sell to a far larger readership. Some papers devote much attention to politics, financial and economic issues; while others focus on 'human interest stories' and scandals. The advent of radio made it possible for a much larger audience of people to get access to the latest news and information. We usually switch on the radio when driving a car to listen to news bulletins and reports presented live at the scene. Listeners are particularly fond of call-in chat-shows and music charts. It has been estimated that most people consider TV their principal source of information. Our everyday life is frequently organized according to the program schedule. We switch it on to watch our favorite series and talk-shows, to watch newly released movies, music videos and news programs. While TV broadcasts are scheduled, the Web allows us to have access to information and forms of entertainment 24/7. Being both the video and audio source of information, the Web contains huge databases of information in every language. It is known for the variety of opinions presented, huge collections of music and movies, e-encyclopedias intended to optimize the search on the Web, e-books and official sites of magazines and papers. Life without the media would be dull and limited. Yet, 'addiction' to some sources of entertainment, such as viewing TV and browsing on the Internet for hours, can badly influence well-being and interpersonal interaction. |
